Peace at Burkhart

Old houses of worship dot rural landscapes.  They often share unique glimpses into a region’s past and of the people who once called that area home.  This building is no different.  I’m sure that if it could talk, this church would have plenty of stories to tell of former congregants and the weddings, funerals and other events that occurred there.  The small, faded, wood-sided structure stands as a silent sentinel as it watches motorists drive by on a nearby highway.    

Known to locals as the Burkhart Church, it’s been a great many years since this little Lutheran church house has held any services. Yet, as this picture shows, it’s still cared for.  Driving by the church recently, I saw that Christmas pine decorations were still in place on the front of the building.

How often do we miss things because we’re in a hurry to get onto the next thing?Burkhart’s presence is a gentle reminder that we need to slow down and quiet our lives. In these days when the world seems so chaotic with a great many voices loudly trying to compete for our attention, this building helps us to reflect on our need for solitude and rest.

Looking at this little church, we’re reminded of the simple truths of the Gospel.  While it may seem austere at first glimpse, the building reminds us of those simple tenets that help us to find the true source of peace, joy, love, grace and hope – through God’s forgiveness and having a vibrant relationship with our Lord and Creator. 

Burkhart stands out as a contrast today.  It was built in a day when many people came to simply worship God and enjoy fellowship with one another.  Unfortunately today, we’re surrounded by so much hurt, pain and anger.  This church is an incredible reminder that we need to slow down.  It is then that we can know the Father’s grace, and be able to receive and show love, mercy and kindness to one another.
